Know Srilanka: Overview
Sri Lanka is a diverse destination with an amazing range of experiences for such a small island. A landmark destination in the ancient spice route, Sri Lanka or ‘Ceylon’ is a package of exciting surprises and experiences. The recorded history of the Island dates back 2500 years when an exiled prince from north India drifted into the shores of Sri Lanka to establish the first known civilisation here.
For a small island, Sri Lanka can boast of a diverse landscape of golden beaches, rolling hills, forests and lush tea plantations.
The Cultural Triangle comprises a succession of ancient capitals and Buddhist sites where intricate carvings and towering stone monuments are scattered throughout the forests. Enormous man-made lakes, tanks, have kept the area irrigated for millennia and continue to provide water for both the paddy fields and thirsty wild elephant that regularly leave the shelter of the jungle to drink. The ever busy lakeside city of Kandy still attracts thousands of devotees to the Temple of the Tooth, while the island’s rich colonial legacy can be seen in Nuwara Eliya - the tea-growing country where the golf course has been challenging players for over a century - and fortified Galle where the Portuguese walls defend Dutch churches and the former homes of British merchants.
Diverse flora and fauna thrive in the plains, wetlands and rainforests, often protected in the national parks scattered throughout the island. Wild elephants are frequently sighted in the parks while the forests and scrub of Yala National Park provide a habitat for one of the world’s densest leopard populations.
Spices, blue sapphires & elephants have been synonymous with Sri Lanka for centuries as the unique location of this island in the Indian Ocean served as a hub for trading. The aromatic cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg & pepper were plenty & the natural sparkle of gems with their multitude of hues iconic to their colourful land. It lured traders & colonizers of the West which resulted in the Portuguese, the Dutch & the British governing the Island each over 150 years, beginning from the 16th Century. This resulted in the island being called the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean”.

Fun Facts About srilanka

Sri Lanka gave "serendipity" to the English language
Did you know that "serendipity", one of Briton's favorite word, is derived from "Serendip", the old name of Sri Lanka called by the Arabs and Persians. The word, invented by the English writer Horace Walpole in 1754, was based on the word on the title of a Persian fairy tale, The Three Princes of Serendip, in which the princes "were always making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity, of things they were not in quest of." With unspoiled beaches, timeless ruins, incredible wildlife, and stunning landscapes, Sri Lanka is called the land of serendipity for a good reason.
